UTM tracking: how to identify where website leads come from

When a company advertises across several channels, a practical question quickly arises: which campaign brought a particular enquiry? UTM tags help send source information to analytics. They do not prove a sale on their own; that requires website events and often CRM data.

Understand the main parameters

utm_source describes the traffic source, utm_medium the channel, and utm_campaign the campaign. Optional parameters such as utm_content and utm_term add detail about creatives or keywords. The exact strings matter less than using a consistent naming convention.

If one team calls paid search cpc and another uses paid_search, reports become fragmented. Agree the naming scheme before campaigns go live.

Avoid common attribution mistakes

Carelessly attaching new UTM parameters to internal website links can overwrite source information. Never put sensitive personal data such as email addresses or phone numbers into campaign URLs. Check that redirects preserve required query parameters and that visitors land on the correct service or language version.

A technically valid link to the wrong offer can produce traffic without meaningful interest.

Combine tags with conversion events

Yandex Metrica goals should track actual outcomes. Distinguish telephone clicks, messenger visits and successful form submissions. When the website uses CRM, pass source data with enquiries so lead quality can be reviewed later.

Test the full journey

Open a tagged link, navigate the landing page, submit an enquiry and inspect analytics. If CRM is connected, confirm the source fields survived. Repeat with mobile browsers and any redirects that campaigns use.

Bottom line: UTM tracking is part of a consistent measurement process. It belongs alongside Yandex Direct management and realistic reporting on leads—not as an isolated promise of growth.
