Cost per lead: how to calculate CPL without losing sight of quality

Advertising platforms display clicks, impressions and spend. Business owners need to know how much each enquiry costs, whether the leads fit their services and which ones become customers. Cost per lead (CPL) is meaningful only when the definition of a lead is consistent.

Define a confirmed lead

A lead could be a successfully received contact form, a verified call or a request for a quotation. A messenger click indicates interest but not necessarily a conversation. Mixing such events produces an unrealistically low CPL.

Report duplicates, spam, irrelevant requests and enquiries from unsupported regions separately.

Calculate CPL carefully

CPL = advertising spend divided by confirmed leads. If a campaign costs 30,000 rubles and generates 15 valid enquiries, CPL is 2,000 rubles. This is an illustrative calculation, not a market benchmark for any industry.

A campaign with cheaper leads may deliver fewer qualified prospects. Compare quality as well as volume.

Follow leads through CRM stages

Useful statuses include received, contacted, qualified, proposal sent and won. This allows the team to evaluate qualified-lead and customer acquisition costs. A long sales cycle cannot be judged fairly after just a few days.

Configure Yandex Metrica goals for successful forms and use consistent UTM parameters for campaign attribution.

Improve the full conversion path

Analyze queries, creatives, targeting and landing pages. Sometimes a high CPL comes from a broken form or unclear offer rather than high click prices. Change meaningful factors methodically and record the outcome.

A useful report includes spend, relevant visits, confirmed enquiries, CPL, qualified leads and data limitations. In Yandex Direct management, that is more valuable than a pretty click chart without sales context.
